Alabama’s Highway 65

If you have driven through the State of Alabama as much as I have in the last 16 years, you would be hard-pressed to find a vegetarian restaurant on the beaten path.  As time passed, we noticed a paradigm: new places cropping up with more vegetarian options on their menus.  A few years later, we saw that a few vegetarian restaurants might yield enough business to be fully sustainable in urban locations. But we have never gone out of our way to try them out until now!  Eating Vegetarian in Alabama!

Montgomery Alabama

Hey! Alabama Is Eating Our Greens!

Our son recently converted to a plant-based diet during his freshman year of college after experiencing gut bio issues. A different diet became imperative for him to live without discomfort.  He started by removing meat, then dairy, and adapted to a cleaner eating approach. Occasionally, he eats fish but mostly hearty legumes, grains, and veggies.

As he progressed through changing his eating habits, he found more energy and a healthier perspective on life. These incremental changes were the genesis of this next series of articles for Foraging and Farming Media. It brings guest writers and a fresh perspective on eating whole foods. Clean eating and a good diet are things I aspire to as I meet my mid-50s.  When our son comes home for visits, we look for creative recipes, and he helps guide us toward more plant-based eating ideas.

Eating Vegetarian In Alabama

Next time you eat out, indulge yourself and look at the menu from the perspective of the amount of plant-based options available.  Most menus offer up to 25% meatless or vegan. Some may offer a pasta dish or dairy-rich item or two.  When looking for restaurant ideas, an excellent resource is The Vegetarian Resource Group, a website dedicated to vegetarian restaurants, recipes, vegan in a nutshell, and press releases on the latest in eating meatless and clean.  Come with us on this exploration as we look to eat better, enjoy new dishes, and make new friends along the way!
